A day in the life of our homeschool: 9-28-05
Susan, 7; Peter, 5; Edmund, 3 and Lucy 5 months. I included all household activites because it is impossible to seperate school and daily life. 7:30 am. Awake. Nurse Lucy.
8-ish. Emerge to find Edmund in living room with Pop-tart crumbs on the sofa. Rats. Drink coffee. Check email. Kids play Legos in LR.
8:45 Cook muffins. Listen to children play. Listen to Peter tell Edmund to go away. Susan leads storyline. Lucy does pre-crawling exercises in playpen. Susan and Peter claim they are not hungry. I tell them if you don't eat now, there will not be food before lunch. They decide to eat now.
9:12. Send children to get dressed, teeth and hair. I eat ceral. Wonder what will happen on LOST tonight.
9:15 Read Going on a Bear Hunt to Edmund twice.
9:35 Attempt to get Peter to count to 100. Met with great resistance. Do Awana verse instead with success.
9:40 Susan does three pages in her Awana book. I call her the Human Sponge. Edmund does some Awana work. Nurse baby. She goes for a nap at 10 am, so I decide to let them play Legos until I put her down.
10:05. Baby to bed. Susan to her room with her math paper. Peter and I count to 100. I write numbers down for him to see if he knows what they are. Count by 2s and 5s. Wash dishes as doing this.
10:21 Susan is half done with her math paper. Bring her to kitchen table to finish. Check crying baby. Hope she goes to sleep. More dishes.
10:30. Susan done with math paper. Count by 10s to 200 with her because she got it wrong on paper.
10:35. Give five minute break. Listen to Peter attempt to sing Caedmon's Call song "Share the Well." He calls it the "Jedi" song. He also sings some TobyMac. Very amusing.
10:36 Baby still not asleep but not crying.
10:39 Tell boys to stop name calling. Legos resume.
10:41 Back to kitchen table for reading and grammar. A linking verbs lesson. Get angry at boys for bothering me while I try to work with their sister.
10:55 Get call from dentist. Oops! Forgot today's appointment for Susan and Peter. Reschedule.
11 am Susan reads to me. Edmund asks me twice to read a book to him. He sits on my lap as Susan reads.
11:12 Narriation a big flop. She does much better if you ask her pointed questions. Have to work on this.
11:20 Read book to Edmund. Others go into bedroom to play. I take a break to check email. Back to kitchen to see Edmund playing in yucky sink water.
11:30 Go get baby Lucy up. Still asleep so I let her go. Fold yesterday's laundry.
11:45 Baby awake to playpen. Fold more. Peter outside. Other two play together. Each puts some laundry away.
11:55 Susan on compter. Baby fusses.
12:15 Done feeding baby. Lift her over head to make baby noises and silly faces. She spits up down the front of my shirt. Once in a clean shirt, start lunch.
12:30 Susan protests apple slices and has no ice cream for dessert. Lucy in my arms reaching for juice bottle.
12:35 Diaper needs attention.
12:40 My lunch. Peter inside.
12:50 Edmund done with lunch. All three in computer room. Susan reads a story from Starfall to them. Very cute. I wash dishes.
1 pm. Susan in her room to "fun" read. Peter on my lap at the table to practice his name and letters. He is not thrilled, but we get it done.
1:15. Boys paint. I feed Lucy and read newspaper. Some discussion of electric eels.
1:24. Painting ends in mess. Boys go play in their room. Susan still reading. Baby in playpen. Can I finish the paper?
1:27 Susan reports Peter jumped on her. Still trying to finish paper.
1:34 Done with paper. Do laundry and more dishes. Play with baby on floor a bit. Boys try to get Susan to open bedroom door which is locked.
1:49 Baby tries to eat Buzz Lightyear. Boys still trying to get attention. I tidy kitchen.
1:57 Susan is now playing with boys. A game involving a pen and paper. Good - she is practicing handwriting. Not sure how long she read though.
2:15 Baby to bed for nap. Susan and I at table to read and handwriting. Discipline Peter for hitting Edmund.
2:20 Done with "school." Cookie snack.
I'm a morning person. I need the majority of our work done by noon or it might not get done at all.
Going for coffee now...
